Stone: The Ties that Bind (The Forbidden Love Series Book 4) Page 6
“It’s a beautiful sunny day, now get,” she said as she shook her ass in her tight jeans and walked towards the kitchen.
Damn…yummy.
I jumped in the shower and thought about the drive to Syracuse. Lucky for me, I don’t drive, Frank does. It also gave me some time to sit, talk and stare at Genevieve. I get hard just thinking about her.
“Hey, hurry, so you can call your driver!” Genevieve shouted.
I chuckled. She already knew me all too well.
Frank arrived at her home and we headed out towards Syracuse. Never have I ever seen such a beautiful woman in a pair of jeans, blouse and flat shoes. Her hair was up in a ponytail. She looked fucking amazing. The company and the atmosphere in the car were explosive. As much as I wanted to slip my hands over Genevieve’s curvaceous ass, I kept my composure. This was a business call and I didn’t want her to know I was a no-good womanizer.
“Are you going to call your friend?”
She grabbed her cell phone from her purse.
“Sure,” she pressed the number.
She placed the phone against her plump, shiny pink lips and I could only imagine what she tasted like.
“Well?” I said.
“Straight to voicemail,” she said as her eyebrows creased.
“What’s wrong?”
“She’s probably at lunch. She usually shuts her phone off when she’s eating,”
“I thought we were going to her job?”
“Change of plans Mr. Turner,”
“Let’s go there first then,”
“Okay, hey frank, make a left and go straight!” she shouted.
“I like a woman in charge. Gets me hot,”
“Oh please, anything gets you hot,”
“I like you, you know that right?”
She turned to me, smiled and shook her head.
“I know your type, unfortunately, I’d only use you for one thing,”
“yeah, what’s that?”
“Sex and lots of it. I’m a man eater, Jacks,”
“You are?”
“I am,” she giggled so sweetly. I wanted to grab her and kiss her hard.
“You’re no such-“
“There, I mean, here!” she yelled to Frank.
The car swerved as frank cursed under his breath. We pulled up in front of a white house with black shutters. The vinyl siding seemed a little old and the place seemed unkempt.
“She lives here?” I said perusing the area.
“She does,” She said as she kneeled on the porch and placed her hand under the damp welcome mat. “Here it is,” she held a key that was attached to a lucky rabbit’s foot. I haven’t seen that in years.
“Is it alive?” I asked.
“Come on,” she said as she unlocked the door. “Beverly, Beverly are you home?” she shouted.
“Beverly’s at work sweetheart,” I chuckled.
“Come on,” She grabbed my hand and led me to the kitchen. “Beverly!” she yelled.
She let go of my hand and ran to Beverly who laid sprawled along the kitchen floor with a bullet between her eyes. The kitchen floor was soaked in her blood.
“Genevieve don’t touch her. I’ll call it in.” I said.
She stared at me with fear and distrust in her eyes. She stood up slowly and walked backwards towards the kitchen door.
“Don’t come any closer,” she whispered.
“Genevieve, what’s wrong with you?”
“You did this?” she said teary eyed.
“What?”
“You…you government guys. You find something out and you just kill whomever you want to cover shit up. She was an old lady for god’s sakes,” she wiped her tears with her hand.
“Gen, I would never hurt anyone,”
“You’re a liar!” she sobbed.
“Why would I lie?”
“You weren’t even surprised. It’s like you knew this was going to happen,”
“You’re really wrong about this. I’m calling this in,” I walked towards the front of the house and walked out the front door.
I dialed 911 and waited for the police to get to the house. Genevieve stood inside. I could hear her sobbing. I shook my head and stood far away from her. I didn’t know what this chick was thinking, and I didn’t want to know. I felt bad enough finding this old lady dead.
Within a few minutes, the police car pulled up to the front of the house. The officers stepped out of the car and approached me.
“Good morning, Sir. You called?”
“Yes, there’s a body in there. A friend of my girlfriends.”
“and you are?”
“I’m special agent Jackson Turner,” I extended my hand for a handshake, but he skipped the welcome to Syracuse hospitality.
“Excuse me, agent Turner,” the officer said, pulling out his cell phone.
“Captain, we have a situation over here. Can you send Detective Darwin here? It’s an apparent homicide. Also, send the coroner’s office,” He glanced over at me. “This is out of your jurisdiction I’m assuming?”
“You assumed correctly, but, there’s foul play and she works at a government agency, so, I’m in the right place,”
“Good, maybe you can help, but for now, step aside, Sir,” he said spitefully.
Before I knew it, a slew of police offers, news reporters and pedestrian were gathering in front of the house. I casually walked around to the back of the house and saw Genevieve standing outside holding on to her stomach.
“Gen?” I whispered.
“How could this happen, Jacks?” She sobbed.
I stood silent.
I didn’t know what the fuck was going on. All I knew was that I didn’t have time to get involved in this murder. A police officer walked towards us.
“Mr.”
“Turner, Special Agent Jackson Turner,” I shook his hand firmly.
“Special Agent Turner, did you see what happened?”
“We walked into this mess. I was getting information about a birth certificate from this woman, apparently someone else had other plans,”
“and this young woman?”
“She’s with me. I brought her along for the long ride,” I winked at the officer.
“I see. We’ll be getting in touch with you Agent Turner. Don’t leave the state.”
“Of course. I must get back to New York City. I have a case I’m working on,”
“Is it the same case with the birth certificate?”
“I’m not at liberty to tell. Have your guys contact my guys,” I grabbed Genevieve’s trembling hands and she followed quickly.
“We’ll be in touch,” he said suspiciously.
I pulled Genevieve as close as I could to me and we walked towards Frank. He was waiting outside of the car smoking a cigarette. He dropped the cigarette on the floor as we approached him. He opened the door quickly and Genevieve and I entered the car.
“Jesus, Jacks.” She sobbed.
I held her in my arms, inhaling her sweet perfume and the scent of her hair. I kissed her forehead gently and knew at that very moment, I was falling for her hard. She held me tighter and I kissed her cheek and rubbed my nose gently against her face.
“Gen, it’s okay. I got you, baby. I want to take care of you,”
She glanced up at me. Her green eyes burned a hole in my heart. Her eyes were red and filled with tears. I kissed her eyes. Each one. She puckered her lips to kiss me and I caved in like any man would. I kissed her softly, reaching with my hands to slide my fingers through her ponytail. She continued to cry as she kissed me, and I smoothed away her tears that fell upon her lips with my tongue.
“I don’t want to wait any longer, Jacks. I want you.” she whispered against my lips, staring into my eyes.
“Don’t do something you’ll regret later, Gen. We have a lifetime,” I couldn’t believe those words slipped from my lips.
Who the fuck was I? What had she done to me?
“You’re right, but Jacks
, I…” she grazed my cheek with her hand.
My heart hammered against my chest.
“Yes…Just let me hold you. I’m here. I’m here,” I whispered as I held her tightly in my arms.
Frank drove, and I drove myself crazy. I needed this woman in my life. She was different from the others; not like any woman I met before and I had plenty; but the rage I had inside of me against this Stone family ate away at my insides. This murder made things complicated and there were just too many unanswered questions. This love affair had to be put on the back burner, but I wouldn’t let her go. I couldn’t.
Chapter 12
Alyssa
“Good Morning, we’d like to get a copy of our birth certificates,” I said politely.
“How old are you darling?” The receptionist asked.
“I’m nineteen,” I replied.
“and you?” she eyed Danny.
“Twenty-three,” he answered giving her the evil eye.
“Let’s see here. What’s your name?”
“Alyssa Stone,” I said almost in a whisper.
“Alyssa Stone. Let’s see you have two, no three birth certificates that show up in the system. What the h-?”
“What is it? What’s wrong?” I asked nervously.
“Can you come with me to my office?”
“Sure,” I said and nodded at Danny to follow.
“Diane, can you cover for me? I have to go to my office for a few,” she asked a woman on the way to her office. The woman nodded.
“Come in,”
“What’s going on?”
She sat at her desk and turned on her computer.
“Let me log in,” she stood staring at the computer then glanced over at me.
“There must be some mistake, there are two here, a Sylvester Turner and Mickey Shelton. The second one looks like a botched up copy but was put into the system. The first one is the original,”
“Your mother was Anastasia Stone, correct?”
“Yes,”
“She has five birth certificates and two death certificates, one of the death certificates was signed by Madison Stone for Bryan,” she glanced at us for a moment.
Danny’s eyes filled with tears, but he didn’t let them fall.
“That’s five children. Who was the fifth?” I asked.
“A boy. William Karl Shelton. Died at birth; Let me see here, yes, born before Madison.”
“Jesus, our mother really was a whore,” I jabbed Danny with my elbow.
“Look, we really need a copy of all those birth certificates and the death certificates. We have a lot of unanswered questions about our past,”
“I’m sorry. I just can’t give you these birth certificates just like that. You all have to be present.”
“My mother is dead. She died of Leukemia. Bryan is dead. My sister is sick. Please, we need this information for a blood transfusion.” Danny glanced over at me as I started the crocodile tears. “My older brother died of Leukemia and now, my older sister is showing signs of the same disease. Please, please help us,” I pleaded.
I deserved an academy award but, it took a while for the woman to warm up to us.
“There was another relative of ours, he…was killed; Joseph Shelton?”
“Let me check. You know I shouldn’t be doing this. It’s illegal,”
“You’re a life saver, Mrs. We just can’t do anything without knowing.” I sobbed.
Danny stared at me for a moment and I kicked him. He woke up quickly and glanced over at the woman. She glared at him then looked over at me.
“Joseph Shelton, let’s see, his mother’s name is missing, no…wait, there’s another birth certificate here. Annette is the mother… No, Mickey Shelton is not his father. Look, I don’t have a clue what’s going on in this family, but these birth certificates seemed to have been tampered with. I think I should call the authorities,” she said nervously.
“Wait, no one has to know, just give us a copy please…of all of them. We need to save our sister and we need to know if Joseph Shelton was related to us in any way. Maybe he has family that could donate bone marrow.” I glanced over at Danny and his eyes bulged out of his head. “It’s the only way to know. She’s running out of time. We need your help, please…” I begged.
“Wait here,” she practically jumped out of her chair and walked hurriedly out of the room.
“What the hell are you doing, Lyssa?” Danny barked.
“I’m leaving here with those fucking birth certificates with or without you?” she said through gritted teeth.
“Calm down, Lyssa” He whispered.
“You calm down. Momma and daddy were the only stable people in our fucked-up lives. Someone did this shit on purpose. Someone wanted them never to be together. He could’ve adopted us. We could’ve been a real family.”
The woman stormed in with a man.
“You need to leave right now,” he shouted.
“Excuse me?” Danny said rising to his feet.
“You. need. to. leave. did I stutter?”
“We’re not going anywhere! How about that?” Lyssa shouted.
“You need to leave now!” The man barked.
“We’re not leaving without those birth certificates!” Danny yelled.
“Sir let me give it to them. They need it. The sister, she’s sick.” The woman trembled as she spoke.
“Mrs. Grant, you can’t give just give out birth certificates like they were baseball game tickets, you know that!” He shouted.
“Mr. Davis, please, I won’t have an innocent woman die because of me! I won’t” she cried.
“Give them the goddamn birth certificates then get the hell out of here! Hurry up Mrs. Grant, or I’ll have your job!” he slammed the door shut and she started working on getting the birth certificates for us.
I needed to breathe. I lost my shit. Danny lost his shit, too. I stared at the woman getting the birth certificates, I was counting in my head, she was taking too long. I stood up and worked back and forth biting my nails and watching Danny because he was as desperate and nervous as I was.
“Fuck lady hurry up before that guy comes back in here and I end up in jail!” he shouted.
The woman stamped each birth and death certificate and placed everything in a manila envelope and sealed it.
“Leave,” she whispered.
“How much?” I asked.
“Just leave,” she whispered.
I grabbed the envelope, walked towards the door and Danny followed.
“Hey,” The woman shouted.
I turned around quickly and stared at her.
“I hope your sister pulls through,” she said.
“Thanks,” I said with a lump in my throat.
Danny grabbed me by the arm and we ran out of the building. We continued to run and needed to cross the street when we almost got run over by a black car with tinted windows. The car swerved and hit the brakes, when Danny grabbed and held me to shield me from the car.
“Are you out of your minds!” The guy shouted.
“I’m…I’m sorry,” I said shaken up.
The back window of the car slid down slowly and the face of the man I saw made my stomach hurt. It was him. He was here in Syracuse. The stranger from Miami. He stared at me as if he wanted to say something, then suddenly the window closed, and the car disappeared into traffic. I grabbed Danny and pulled him across the street.
“Open the door, hurry!” I shouted.
“Okay,” Danny said.
He opened the door quickly and we jumped in the car.
“What’s wrong with you?” he asked.
“Just drive. Drive, now.” I barked.
Chapter 13
Jackson
My heart raced against my chest as I pressed the button to close the window to the car.
“What’s wrong?” Genevieve whispered.
“Nothing,” I turned away from her.
“Jacks, please don’t lie to me. If we’re going to be to
gether. You have to be honest with me.” She grabbed my hand gently.
“That young lady we almost ran over was my niece,”
“The young woman you’re looking for?”
“Yes, but I’m afraid I ruined everything when I stalked her in Miami,”
“This is all very strange,”
“I should’ve never dragged you into this,”
“It’s funny how she was across the street from the birth certificate building. Maybe she’s looking for answers, too.”
“There’s a lot going on here. I almost regret being so angry all these years; thinking of only killing Madison and taking Alyssa. I should’ve looked for her earlier; built a bond with her…a connection.”
“Killing Madison?”
“I told you everything, remember. It’s how I feel. I can’t help it.”
“I don’t know how you think you’re going to get in that girl’s life. She’s not a child anymore.”
“I know.” I needed to stop talking to her.
I knew she was right and it would only be a matter of time when all of this would come out and they would all get hurt.
I sat back and grabbed her hand. I gently stroked her the top of her hand letting her know I didn’t want to speak about anything anymore. She placed her head on my shoulder and stood silent. The ride home was long, and I thought about the moment I made contact with Alyssa’s crystal-clear blue eyes, I could tell she was shaken up. She must’ve known about the birth certificates, after all, she was running out of that building with her brother. I could’ve only imagined the shock.
We finally arrived in New York City. Genevieve was asleep, and I kissed her forehead gently to wake her up.
“Hey, we’re here.” I whispered.
She stretched her arms and opened her beautiful green eyes.
“I didn’t even realize I fell asleep. I’ll take the train home.” She said.
“Train? No,”
“Why?”
“Gen, I hate to say this, but…I really think you need to stay with me. After what happened to Beverly, I’m afraid you’re caught up in this mess. They killed her to teach you a lesson. I have to protect you at all costs.” I said nervously.
Her green eyes opened wide like saucers.
“But—”
“I need you to stay with me.”
“What? This is insane!” she barked.
